Dear Kakashka
CUSTOMER NUMBER:.712370

Welcome to the June issue of Focus Online!

Come August 2008, millions of people around the world (including me!) will be glued to their television sets, watching the best athletes in the world compete in what remains the pinnacle of sporting endeavour: the Olympic Games.

How amazing that the Games have survived for more than 2700 years! Equally astonishing are the inspirational young people who work so hard to get there. It's our athletes drive, determination and spirit of adventure that we celebrate in our 2008 Beijing Olympics issue - while in our annual Children's Health issue, we recognise the potential athletes of our young achievers of the future.

As you may know already, our Children's Health stamps have a 10-cent surcharge that we donate to New Zealand's Children's Health Camps (Te Puna Whaiora) to support their work in transforming children's lives - while at the same time raising awareness of this wonderful cause. Children's Health Camps have been helping some of our vulnerable children and their families for nearly 90 years. The camps provide a caring, supportive and healthy environment where primary school children receive training in social skills, peer relationships, and health management. The theme for this year is 'Investing for the Future'.

I hope you enjoy these two magnificent stamp issues depicting the achievers of today...and tomorrow!

Your sincerely

2008 Beijing Olympics Stamps

olympics

Between 8 and 24 August 2008, more than 10,700 athletes from around the world will gather for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games - competing in 28 sports (more than 300 events) at 31 venues in and around China's capital city. This momentous four-yearly event, which dates back to 776 BC and the plains of ancient Olympia, is the premier event on the international sporting calendar.

New Zealand has proudly been part of the Olympic movement since 1908, when we teamed up with Australia to compete under the banner of 'Australasia'. We won our first medal the same year, with a bronze for Harry Kerr in the 3500-metre walk. In 1920 we sent our first official Olympic team, and since then our athletes have achieved remarkable success, winning gold in sports ranging from boxing to athletics, yachting, rowing, hockey, equestrian, canoeing, boardsailing, swimming, cycling and triathlon.
In this stamp issue New Zealand Post celebrates all of those New Zealanders who strive to achieve at the pinnacle of their chosen sport.

Children's Health Stamps - Investing for the Future

health

As athletes from around the world gather to compete in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, New Zealand Post applauds the efforts of our young achievers of the future with the 2008 Children's Health stamp collection. Titled 'Investing for the Future', the collection recognises the work of New Zealand's Children's Health Camps (Te Puna Whaiora) in transforming children's lives.

While not every child can grow up to be an Olympic competitor, they all have the right to fulfil their true potential. Te Puna Whaiora helps them to do just that, by providing targeted, solution-focused residential and non-residential programmes and mentoring for children aged five to 12 years whose physical and mental wellbeing is at risk.

Matariki Stamp Issue

matariki

For the Maori people, the night skies in June traditionally have huge significance: they herald the dawn of a new Maori year. The annual appearance of the seven stars of 'Mataraki' (or the Pleiades constellation) signals a time for renewal, reflection and celebration!

New Zealand Post is delighted to join the Matariki festivities with this, the first in a series of annual stamp issues, exploring different aspects of Maori culture and heritage. Taking a fascinating journey through Maori history and culture, we celebrate not only the constellation itself but also connections to the sea, to the land and to family (whanau). We also learn about the Maori worldview in which the gods, Sky Father Ranginui, Earth Mother Papatuanuku and their children, personify the dramatic forces of nature.
