| | | | Dear Kakashka | CUSTOMER NUMBER:.712370 | | | | Honouring the achievements of two extraordinary men.
I'm delighted to write to you about our latest stamp issues, which celebrate the lives and adventures of two of the 20th century's greatest achievers. The late Sir Edmund Hillary - mountain conqueror, ice explorer, international ambassador and generous benefactor - will be remembered in history as an extraordinary man. He achieved so much in his 88 years, yet remained the quintessential Kiwi, combining modesty and capability with an enthusiastic 'can do' attitude. To honour this extraordinary man, his life and achievements, we are releasing a commemorative stamp issue and a special Philatelic Numismatic Cover. The stamps feature key milestones such as Sir Ed's ascent of Mt Everest, the Antarctica expedition, the foundation of the Himalayan Trust and his award of the United Kingdom's highest honour, Knight of the Order of the Garter. Wonderful portraits, they capture key moments of which we are particularly proud. As a special addition to the stamp issue, we are extremely proud to offer the first PNC released in 6 years - honouring the late Sir Ed, with the support of Lady Hillary. The limited Sir Edmund Hillary PNC includes a first day cover with a legal tender brilliant uncirculated coin depicting our most loved hero. This stamp issue with additional PNC follows on from the hugely successful gold and silver proof coins released earlier this year. .explorers in common
Sir Ed's Antarctic exploits followed those of another of history's great explorers - Sir Ernest Shackleton, who 100 years ago was leading the British Antarctic Expedition in its efforts to reach the South Pole. While the goal proved unattainable, the Expedition nevertheless recorded a number of successes, which we celebrate in the Ross Dependency stamps which are the second of our stamp issues this month. Featuring a presentation pack that gives details of this epic journey, it's a collection well worth ordering. And finally, keep an eye out for the upcoming New Zealand Collection 2008 - our annual album celebrating another year of stunning stamp design. I'll let you know more about this soon! Yours sincerely Ivor Masters General Manager Stamps and Collectables | | | | | | | | | Sir Edmund Hillary 1919-2008 | | Sir Edmund Percival Hillary, KG, ONZ, KBE, was a man of mountains and much, much more. Achieving global fame when he conquered the world's highest mountain in 1953, he went on to achieve on many other levels - as an intrepid explorer, an Antarctic adventurer, an international diplomat and, perhaps most significantly, his years of dedication to the people of Nepal. When Sir Ed died in January 2008, New Zealand lost its greatest hero - a man who, despite his daring and sometimes dangerous exploits, remained humble and unassuming to the end. Described as the 'quintessential Kiwi', he epitomised our 'can do' attitude, tackling every challenge with tenacity, grit and a belief that nothing was impossible. In this special commemorative stamp series we pay tribute to this great man and his extraordinary achievements. Exclusive Sir Edmund Hillary PNC release! For the first time in six years, New Zealand Post is releasing a Postal Numismatic Cover (PNC). Given Hillary's status and achievements, we are extremely proud to offer, with the support of Lady Hillary, a PNC that honours New Zealand's greatest hero. Released following the success of the gold and silver versions, these coins will not be offered separately to this PNC. Continue to commemorate the life of this great man, by securing yours today. | | | | | | Ross Dependency 2008 Stamp Issue | | For more than a century, the name 'Shackleton' has been inextricably linked with the great Antarctic explorer who not once, but twice, took part in expeditions to claim the South Geographic Pole. In 2008, we remember his brave second expedition which, although unsuccessful in reaching its ultimate goal, nevertheless resulted in a number of significant achievements. On New Year's Day 1908, Ernest Shackleton and his team left the South Island port of Lyttelton on board the Nimrod. As the 'British Antarctic Expedition', they were fulfilling a dream that had consumed Shackleton since he'd been invalided home with scurvy during Robert Scott's 1901 National Antarctic Expedition. | | | | | | | | | | Christmas 2008 Stamp Issue | | The story of Christmas may be the same across the world, but people's experiences and perceptions of Christmas vary immensely. For some New Zealanders, it's a family tradition repeated year after year with all the trimmings of turkey and Christmas pudding - while for others it's a day at the beach with the barbecue and a beer. It's a diversity we celebrate in style, with our Christmas 2008 stamps. | | | | | | North Island Main Trunk Line Centenary | | On 7 August 1908, the first train ever to travel the length of New Zealand's North Island Main Trunk Line left Wellington, bound for Auckland. Three months later, the route was officially opened - the culmination of 23 years of backbreaking work in some of the country's toughest terrain. 1n 2008, we celebrate the Line's centenary, its important role in New Zealand's economic and social development and its enduring place in our contemporary world. | | | | | | | | | | NZ Pre-decimal Currency Type Set | Now is your chance to secure your own piece of New Zealand's monetary history with the release of this unique and limited pre decimal coin set. The last self-governing dominion of the British Commonwealth to issue its own coins, the passage of The Coinage Act in 1933 enabled the creation of a variety of New Zealand denominations based on the fractional sterling system. Struck by the Royal Mint in Britain, the threepence, sixpence, shilling, florin and half-crown were first seen in 1933, with the halfpenny and penny released in 1940. Minted during the reigns of George V, George VI and Elizabeth II, all seven denominations were issued until 1965, when New Zealand began the countdown to decimalisation. In 1967, New Zealand moved to a 'decimal' coinage system which rendered the coins offered in this set demonetarised. Each seven coin set contains an original (circulated) coin from each of the denominations of these first New Zealand coins - these are real treasures! | | | | | | Be in to win a 2009 Icons of New Zealand yet-to-be-released Silver Proof coin!
