Honouring a New Zealand icon of the seas.
When internationally renowned sailor and environmentalist Sir Peter Blake was murdered in 2001, the people of New Zealand were shaken to the core. A long-time icon of the nation - winner of global ocean races, indefatigable leader of our challenge for the America's Cup - Sir Peter was just beginning a new phase of his life, raising public awareness of the threats facing the planet's aquatic environment.
In November 2009, we're proud to honour this extraordinary man with a stamp release that will be launched just days before Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum opens its new exhibition: Blue Water Black Magic - A Tribute to Sir Peter Blake.
Take a look at our website and you'll see that we've created a superb range of collectables for you to choose from. The stamps celebrate five elements of Sir Peter's life, around leadership and determination. There are also two first day covers, a miniature sheet and a presentation pack, with commentary from Peter Montgomery, the voice of yachting in New Zealand. The presentation pack includes a special imperforate miniature sheet that is also an adult entry ticket (valued at $16.00) to visit Blue Water Black Magic - A Tribute to Sir Peter Blake at Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum. Only 4,000 of these special imperforate miniature sheets have been produced.
We've also chosen this issue to publish one of our prestigious Limited Editions. A unique numbered and limited product, it includes a personal perspective of Sir Peter Blake from world-renowned yachting journalist, Bob Fisher, that I know you'll enjoy reading.
International cooperation in Antarctica
Sir Peter recognised the significance of the Antarctic natural environment and was a strong advocate for its continued protection. It's a principle that's embodied in the Antarctic Treaty, which was established by 12 countries in 1959 and now has 47 countries as signatories.
In the Ross Dependency stamp issue we celebrate the Treaty's 50th anniversary by issuing five commemorative stamps and a first day cover on the same day as the Sir Peter Blake collection. Please take a few minutes to read more about this milestone - then place your order for two significant stamp issues that reflect one of New Zealand's iconic heroes and our connection to the world's southernmost continent.
Yours sincerely
