| 'We will remember them' For me, as I know it is for thousands of other New Zealanders, 25 April is one day of the year that strikes a particularly personal chord. Getting up well before sunrise, my family and I attend one of the many Anzac Day dawn services held around the country. Bracing ourselves against the chill of the early morning air, we stand silent in remembrance of those who have served New Zealand during wartime. It's an incredibly moving occasion - from the slow, solemn parade of returned servicemen and women to the lone bugler sounding the Last Post, followed by a minute's silence and the sounding of Reveille. I'm very pleased to see that more and more young people are taking the opportunity to join the Anzac Day commemorations - and I'm particularly proud to present a stamp issue that honours this special day. In 2010, we launch the third in our ANZAC Series; six stamps that, through historic and contemporary images, convey the essence of 'remembrance'. Each has its own story, documented by Dr Stephen Clarke - Chief Executive of the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services' Association - in the special miniature sheet booklet that's part of the issue. It makes fascinating and thought-provoking reading. An animal in danger On the topic of thought provoking, the issue of climate change is reminding us all of the fragility of our planet - something we can already see in the number of 'critically endangered' animals in our environment. That's why, every year, New Zealand Post endeavours to raise awareness of one such animal through a unique set of coins - and in 2010 it's the Maui's dolphin. The fact that the sighting of a Maui's dolphin made newspaper headlines recently highlights the plight of these incredibly rare mammals. Take a look through our website and I'm sure you'll be inspired to order your own set of these coins. Your sincerely Ivor Masters General Manager Stamps and Collectables |
