| | | | | Dear Kakashka | May 2010 | | | | | He manu tukutuku te rangi ka uhia he huruhuru te manu ka tau Kites adorn the sky as feathers adorn the birds June heralds the season of Matariki, the time of year that in traditional Maori terms marks the end of one year and the beginning of the next. It's the perfect time to celebrate with two indigenous stamp issues, one featuring an icon of Matariki traditions and the other marking the centenary of Maori excellence in our national game. Taking to the skies for the new Maori year
In 2010 we release the third in our annual Matariki stamp series. It features 'manu tukutuku' (traditional Maori kites) - icons that are rich in cultural significance and an integral part of Maori folklore and rituals. Traditionally manu tukutuku were produced and flown at the time of Matariki. Records indicate there were about 17 different types; however, only four have survived from the 19th and early 20th centuries. We're proud to feature two remaining specimens of these amazing flying artworks on our stamps. The other two stamps feature commissioned artworks from Veranoa Hetet, a traditional and contemporary Maori weaver. I'm also delighted to use this stamp issue for one of our special Limited Edition products that I know will be in hot demand. Take a look at our website to find out more! And to the rugby field for a 100-year anniversary Maori are also the stars of a unique stamp issue that coincides with the 100th anniversary of the first game played by the New Zealand Maori men's rugby team. Striding on to the pitch in Rotorua on 21 May 1910, these men could not have known the legacy they would leave for generations to follow - both in their fast, open playing style and in the tenacity with which they managed to win the game. Such is the significance of the jersey that features on the 50-cent stamp that the New Zealand Rugby Union has requested that we keep the image embargoed until an official release on 2 June. We'll send you an email on 2 June with images, so you can see what this beautifully designed jersey and stamp look like, along with the second stamp, which features the centenary design. In the meantime I urge you to order your stamps today so you too can join these two special celebrations.
